Hello everyone. My name is George Fraser a former Alder Pointer who now resides in Brighton, On. I am just about ready to retire full time and have always wanted to come up with some such idea that may put one Alder Pointer in contact with another. I want to do this in a very private way so that I will not pass information to anyone who does not wish to have it sent out. I just want to act as a go between. For example, someone might have a question about a particular item so they can contact me and I will attempt to get the answer and get back to them. In other words a free flow of information between individuals with an interest in Alder Point.
I thought by creating a BLOG such as this I could reach as many Alder Pointers who live there, or who at one time lived there, had or have relatives still there or who are just wannabee Alder Pointers. I recently wrote a brief history, “Alder Point” which generated a lot of interest and caused me to think that we may have all kinds of Alder Pointers who have moved ‘away’ who might be interested in this type of BLOG.
What I intend to do is pass along from time to time interesting articles, OBITS, historical information, genealogical information and general information that could be sent to me for publication on my BLOG that others on the list may find interesting. I would aim to generate at least one BLOG per week so as not to get too boring.
Anyone wishing to contact me with information about their family or requesting information about family I would review and so long as it is in good taste send it out on my BLOG for input. Individuals may from time to time wish to contact a person off-line and I would also accommodate such a request and connect two people who may wish to communicate with each other but not wish to go public. I will never send out an e-mail address without the permission of it’s owner – I promise – like we used to say at school “help me God bye”.
Now to get started I will need as many of your e-mail addresses as I can muster. So please, at your convenience send me your e-mail address as well and e-mail addresses for others you might think have an interest and I will include you and them in my Alder Point News List.

Hi George – This is the first blog I have received in a long time. I thought I got dropped off the list.
This is a response to Rick Dugas.
You’re grandfather Merle and I are first cousins. Our fathers (Warren and Cecil) were brothers. Merle was my hero. He saved my hide once when I was about 5 or 6 yrs. old (he’s 4 years older than I). I set fire to a dead tree. He happened along just as the tree started to blaze. He and Ambrose Devoe ran to and from the well with buckets of water to throw on the tree and managed to put out the flame. Best of all, he never told my parents and they never found out – I certainly didn’t tell them.

For those who were inquiring: My father was Cecil Dugas, Warren was his brother. My mother was Mary MacKinnon (Archie MacKinnon’s sister). Some of my cousins in Alder Point were the Powers and Simons. Walter Dugas was my fathers cousin. We left Alder Point in 1950 and moved to Whitehorse, Yukon. If you figure it out, let me know how we are connected.

Hi Ellamae. I know this is a bit late but I just noticed it. We have never met but I did meet Cathy and JD the last time I visited your father. I was born in the house that you grew up in when our grandparents were still alive and were living there. I remember when your Mom and Dad were dating and Archie never got out of the barn before 10 pm, 7 days a week. Keep in touch and let me know if you ever come out to the wesr coast.

I know this is an old email but since I just found the site, I thought I’d reply to the emails I saw with the most recognizable names. My grandmother was Sarah Dugas who was sister to Warren Dugas, and who married Peter Power. Warren and Grace were my aunt and uncle, and their kids are Merle, Gerard, Marie, Verna and Judy. I last saw Grace at Mass in St Joseph’s Church in BrasD’or in mid 1985. I know she passed in about 1993. My mother was Robina Power who married Bill Burton from North Sydney. He passed in 1959 and my mother in 1963 after she brought us to Ontario. We stayed with our aunt June (Power) Reid. We became a large family and except for my older brother Clifford, we all live outside of Cape Breton now. June passed in 1997 and her husband, Bob (Giz) Reid passed in 1998. I have returned home for various lengths of time over the years and last stayed from 1982 to 1985 and lived in Simon Marsh’s old place at that end of Jessome’s Lane in Mill Creek. We have lots of extended family that have remained. I wish I could make it home more often but with a growing family of my own here in Ontario it’s unlikely I will ever move back. That is the real tragedy of us islanders…we often had to leave home to live and it became harder and harder to ever get home to stay. The internet certainly has opened some doors for those seeking to find people and memoreis. Lord knows I suffer from “sometimers” that is sometimes I remember things and other times I don’t. I remember people when I get the right prompts from others. I just can’t recall it for long. Anyway…there must be other blogs and websites for family to connect in Alder Point. If anyone knows of these perhaps you could send a list to my email address.

I am your mothers cousin. My father Cecil and your grandmother were brother and sister. I remember your grandmother fairly well. I am in contact with your Aunt Della (Toots) and her daughter Kim. I know you know Kim because she has talked about how she spent summers with all the cousins. If you want any info about the family you can email me but I don’t know a lot.

The Peter Power you mention was a brother to my greatgrandmother Mary (Power), daughter of Martin and Jaine Power, Mary married Alexander MacLellan, they had a son, Alexander (Big Sandy) MacLellan, he married Ellen Jane McDonald, they had a son, Alexander (Red Alex), he was my Father.
Think we are related, I’d like to have any info you might have about the Power family. I have been researching my family tree and I need as much material I can get my hands on.

With my interest in trying to compile a genealogy for the Bras d’Or and area you know I’m interested.
Now if someone would start a Historical Society for Bras d’Or and area I’d be a happy camper.

My Dad was Gordie Day & my Mom Sarah Long .We lived next door to my Grand parents Vince & Louise Day .We also know Brighton well ,our son Glenn Vugts lived their for 20 yrs. Hi George, this is a fantastic idea, as you already know I have a keen interest in all things related to Alder Point, I see Anne Dugas wrote that she is related to “Powers”, I am wondering if the name is actually “Power”, as in Peter Power, if so …guess we are related too. My Dad was known as Red Alec growing up, also Sandy, his father was Big Sandy MacLellan, mother Ellen Jane (McDonald) MacLellan, Petrie. Looking forward to reading the blog George.

Hello to all. Just spend a week in Alder Point. Betty, we were in Tim Horton’s one night having coffee and saw you leaving with a coffee. We are going home for the month of July, I’ll definitely take a walk up the road one day and say hello.
All this history brings back lots of memories of both my mom and dad and stories being told around the old coal stove. We are going to be moving the old coal stove this summer, which I’d like to add is in almost as good a shape as it was when it was bought in the 50’s. I still have visions of mom pouring kerosene from the jar and lighting it with a match, I think if I tried that today I might blow it to kingdom come.

Hello to Theresa Dugas Mac Kay. I knew your uncle Al Dugas. He and my parents lived near each other on Vancouver Island and I saw him often when they were still alive. I don’t go to the Island very often now. Also Margurite Dugas was my first teacher at the Bras D’Or school and I saw her many times when she lived in Vancouver. I also knew her husband Gratten O’Shea.

I left Alder Point in 1934 at age 16. Rode the boxcars to B.C. I`ve been back several times after I retired in 1977, still call Alder Point home.
Henry Devoe , my age, is still alive and lives in Buckhorn, Ontario. His phone number is 705 657 7738. I don`t know if he has email. He was in the navy durin;g the war. Thanks, nice to hear from and about everybody.

but moved to LittlePond when his fsther died in 1940.

I’m Elma (Jessome) Eldredge. I lived in Alder Point and Sydney Mines. I moved to the states in 1960 and now live with my husband Frank in Colorado. We have three children. Joe and family live in South Dakota, Star and family live in Illinois. Tanya and family live in Granby, Colorado.
Frank and I are enjoying the pictures and blog of Cape Breton. Many of the names that appear in the blog ring a bell, but some I do not recognize.

Hi my brother Lawrence sent me this blog. I think it is wonderful as I was born in Alder Point in 1937. My parents were Victor Roland and Celina (Walker) Roland. I left home at the age of 18 and have been back most summers. My brother Earl Roland (still lives in Alder Point) and cousin Gilbert Walker and George Fraser, if my memory serves me correct, were best friends growing up. I now live in London, Ont. retired and enjoying life. Betty Walker Graham is also my first cousin.

I was talking to Rhoda Powers. She is the daughter of the late Sadie and Charle Powers for Little Pond Rd. Rhoda June Donny Peter and a few more sisters and brothers. Stumbled across this blog while doing research on some of the Magdalen Islands families who settled in your neck of the woods. Would enjoy knowing more about the Arseneaus, Theriaults and Turbides who settled in Alder Point if you or any of your readers would be so kind to share any information and/or details with me. I’m known as the North American specialist in the genealogies of the Islanders. At this point, I’m tracking down where everyone went, now that the genealogies of the Islands have been researched. Just saw your message. No, my family came to the US straight from the Islands, by way of Lac-au-Saumon to Fall River, MA (maternal side) and via Pictou to Cap-de-la-Madeleine (paternal side). Somehow they all ended up here in Rhode Island. Good thing or I wouldn’t be here writing to you. LOL.
I’m sure I speak for everyone here when I say thanks for providing this forum for us all, to discuss our ancestors and memories of your region. It’s always interesting to read about the lives of those men and women pioneers, especially the kind-hearted Madelinots, like John Arsenault. As you have probably guessed, I am proud to be a descendant of the Islanders. Our large Madelinot family is a far-flung one, with many branches spread out across the continent, but we all have the same roots… grounded in the humble, and hardworking men and women from whom we descend. No matter where they went once leaving the Islands, they gave their all to build the communities in which they found themselves. This is cause for celebration and remembrance.

Hi George . I am catching up on a lot, I missed from knowing everyone in Alder Point . I knew them or heard of them And your site brings back a lot of good Memories . Growing up In The BrasD’or Shacks ,I wasn’t too far from Alder Point And thd the Privelege of touched base with, pretty well everyone, down that way, over the years. When I was a youngster .I worked for the Snow White Dry cleaners . That way I got to visit every house down that way and surrounding areas. I knocked on a lot of doors ,saying ,Anything for Snow White (Dry Cleaners). But most of the time, I knew they had nothing to go to the cleaners , I would Knock anyway just to say hello. I know if ya spoke of, Snow White Cleaners Today, to a few old timers they would remember Later I had a nick name “Snow White” .And There was I, dark as the Ace of Spades . But all the stories and Names of the Alderpointers. Brings back Good ,Good Memories I enjoy your site very much, George .Keep Up The Good Work Buddy.

He was from a large family Marie, Harold, Theresa, Lorretta, Louise, Maydel, Jen, John, Andy, Barny, Emmett(who lives in Alder Point) and my Dad Charles. I am very interested in old photos of the family do you know of any sites of older school photo’s etc.

I am very familiar with your family and went to school with many of them. I wrote a book about Alder Point a few years back and in it mentions your family on a number of occasions. Your best bet to find old pics of that family is to contact first Emmett and then on face book. It is very difficult to get pics from that era but you never know someone may unknowingly be hoarding old school pics from this era. Dont give up and I will keep an eye out for you.

Hi,
My great grandfather was Ambrose Devoe born to James and Margaret Hunt Devoe of Saratoga County, New York. Is this the same Ambrose you write about? Ambrose was born in 1861 in Jobville and died in 1935 outside of Mechanicville, Saratoga County, New York
