CAPE BRETON TOURTIERE – MEAT PIE

 

French Canadien Tourtiere – Meat Pie 

Tourtiere – French Canadien Meat Pie

2 tablespoons oil

1 ½ lb ground pork

1 ½ lb ground beef (lean or med)

1 large onion finely chopped

2 med size potatoes peeled and chopped fine

1 ½ cups water

1 cup soft fine bread crumbs

2 tsp sage

1 ½ tsp salt

½ tsp thyme

½ tsp ground cloves

¼ tsp pepper

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

In a large pot – add the oil at low heat

Add all of the remaining ingredients (except pastry)

Cook stirring occasionally for 30 minutes, or until most liquid is absorbed

But until mixture is still moist

                                          Let cool

Line deep pie plate with pastry

Add filling and cover with top crust. Seal edges and cut slits in top

Bake at 325 degrees F for 35 minutes

Can be frozen – then reheat at 325 degrees F
