CAPERS FIND COMFORT IN CB POST

Caper soldiers in Afghanistan relax with Cape Breton Post

GLACE BAY – A local soldier posted in Afghanistan says he has a special word he uses to describe the Cape Breton Post – comfort.
“To all the boys here, it is a piece of home,” said Petty Officer Derrick Nearing, 47, formerly of New Waterford, who is a physician’s assistant (or as we used to say in the RCN a ‘Sickbay Tiffy’) for the Canadian Armed Forces.
“It is so nice when you are over here – where it is cold, wet and miserable – to get that little piece of home. The girls and guys go through it, they look at the pictures and the stories from Glace Bay, New Waterford, the Northside, Sydney … they read the obituaries, the want ads. It is a little bit of normalcy in a chaotic place. “They are in a place that is uncomfortable; the Cape Breton Post is comfort.
“We lost 10 guys in December here. It is always chaotic here, busy all the time.”
Nearing said his mother, Patricia Nearing of New Waterford, sends copies of the Cape Breton Post to Afghanistan on a regular basis. As soon as a box of the newspapers arrives, they circulate them among all the Cape Bretoners. “We go in each others room and trade them like comic books. After we have circulated them, when any of us are going out to a forwarding base over here, we take care of the guys on the frontlines. We take the Cape Breton Post newspapers to them. They will circulate and read them, then pass them on to another base.”
As a physician’s assistant, Nearing looks after wounded soldiers.
“I work with medical technicians to keep the guys alive to get them home to their families. We walk around and check morale, mental health and so on. We keep everyone healthy and happy.
“It means a lot to the other guys and girls from back home to be able to keep in touch with home through the Cape Breton Post.” Nearing, who is based at CFB Petawawa in Ontario with his wife Maureen and children Hannah, 5, Reilly, 3, is on his second tour to Afghanistan, spending 16 months out of the last 27 months there. He hopes to be returning home in April or May. He has served overseas five times, including time in Germany, Bosnia and Somalia. Patricia said she makes sure her son – and the other local soldiers – get the Post, no matter where they are.
Other family and friends, including Jimmy Hurley of New Waterford, also save the Cape Breton Post and send it and other items to the soldiers, she added.
“Any time Derrick goes away, I save copies and send them to him no matter where he is as I know how much he likes getting it.  “He tells me they sometimes go back and read a copy a second time.”  She said it gives her comfort to send her son this piece of home.
“He has been away from Cape Breton for awhile but Cape Breton is home.”
It is difficult for all mothers having sons and daughters in Afghanistan, she added.
“It is the same for every mother, you go to bed every night and worry about getting that knock on the door.”
Nearing said they want the public to know how much soldiers appreciate the parcels they receive.  “We get thousands and thousands of packages, cards, gifts, presents … the support for our troops is overwhelming. We certainly thank everyone.
“It is impossible to write all the people back. We try to write some letters but we still have a job to do here. We also try and tell people how much this all means to us through means like the Cape Breton Post.”
He said there are wonderful male and female soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
“They do an awful lot of really good work over here. It is unbelievable what goes on here, how much they do.”

CAPE BRETON OATCAKES

CAPE BRETON OATCAKES

2 c flour (all purpose)
2 c rolled oats
1 c brown sugar (packed)
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 c shortening
1/2 c cold water

Savory Variation:
2 c Oatmeal ( scotch type)
1 c flour
2 tsp white sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 c cold water
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 c lard, bacon fat or shortening

The savory variation is closer to the original Scottish version.  If desired,
process the oats in a food processor for 10 seconds to get a finer texture.
The original recipe for oatcakes likely arrived with  Scottish settlers in Cape
Breton.  Fine oatmeal ground in the pioneer’s  grist mills, a little fat worked
with fingertips, and perhaps a touch of  sugar, made a crispy baked “cake
to eat with cheese or jam. Over the  years, Cape Bretoners (and eventually
all cooks across Canada) used rolled oats and more sugar to make a cookie-
like oatcake.

Cape Breton Oatcakes – Sweet Version

Sweet Version:

Stir together flour, oats, sugar, baking powder and salt.  Cut in shortening
with fingertips.  Mix in water with fork, until ball  forms.  Divide in half.
On a floured surface, roll out each half to 1/4 inch (5 mm) thickness.  Cut into
2 1/2 inch (6 squares), then into triangles. Bake on lightly on greased baking
sheets in 350F oven for 15 minutes or till lightly browned.  Cool.  Makes 60.

MACINTOSH BEATEN IN SHERIFF’S VAN

MacIntosh beaten in sheriff’s van after bail denied

Ernest Fenwick (Fen) MacIntosh being escorted by Indian Police at his extradition

HALIFAX — Halifax police are investigating after receiving a report of an assault on an inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional CentreHALIFAX — Halifax police are investigating after receiving a report of an assault on an inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Centre.

Police say the man alleges he was assaulted by another prisoner while in the back of a sheriff’s van.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the investigation is in its preliminary stages and they still have to interview several more witnesses.

A report in the Halifax Chronicle Herald quotes an unidentified inmate at the jail as saying the victim of the assault was convicted sex offender Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh.

A source confirmed the victim was MacIntosh, whose bid for bail was dismissed by a Nova Scotia Court of Appeal judge in Halifax earlier in the day.

Justice Department spokeswoman Jennifer Gavin would only say that an offender “received medical attention for an altercation that occurred in the sheriff’s vehicle, and there was no outside medical attention that was needed.”

MacIntosh was convicted at trial in Port Hawkesbury of 13 charges of indecent assault and gross indecency, and has been in custody since July 20. He is currently appealing his convictions and wanted out of jail until his appeal is resolved.

MACINTOSH DENIED BAIL

(Nancy King – Cape Breton Post)

Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh gets into a lawyer’s car after an appearance in Supreme Court in Port Hawkesbury earlier this year. He was denied bail during an appearance in a Halifax courtsoom Thursday.

HALIFAX — A man who is waiting to be sentenced after he was convicted of sexually molesting two boys in the 1970s was denied bail in a Halifax court today.

Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh, 67, was found guilty last month on 13 charges of indecent assault and gross indecency.

At his trial in Port Hawkesbury, the victims testified that the abuse occurred in the former businessman’s vehicles prior to 1974 when he lived in Cape Breton.

The 67-year-old man is appealing the convictions at the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

MacIntosh was extradited from India in 2007 to face the charges.

MacIntosh is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 14.
