MY RETURN

LCdr George T. Fraser – 1975 CFB Kingston

Many of you may recall that back in February, 2010 I signed off and told you I was entering hospital for major surgery and that I might or might not be back.

Through the Grace of God and your prayers and best wishes I made it and am now at home recuperating and if I dare say so, feeling quite good.

Allow me to bore you with what happened surrounding my operation. As many of you may recall this was my third bout with cancer. Colon, neck and this one the throat. I sat with the two top surgeons at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) in Toronto who advised me they could operate with a good chance of success but that failure was a possibility. I asked what was the alternative to the surgery and they told me two months and I would be dead. They advised me to go home and think about it. I did and discussed with Carmen and decided to go for the surgery. I didnt want to use up many days of the two months  grace they gave me so made up my mind very quickly and called back to PMH and said, “let’s get it on.”

March 3, I was admitted to the Toronto General Hospital. March 4, I underwent an eleven and half operation. The result of which is that they removed my tongue and voice box. I will never speak again nor be able to eat solid food. Also of utmost concern to me was that I lost forever my Cape Breton Accent. I knew this going in and decided that I could live with that and was not yet ready for the alternative. I spent 28 days in hospital and was released April 1, in time to enjoy Easter Weekend with visitors; Marilyn and Jim Broderick, Judy and Ed McCready (my sisters) and my brother Doc (Simon). After describing what I would like to have in our rec room to enable me to speak to folks, my nephew Mark Watson knew exactly what I wanted and went out and purchased a HD TV and a wireless keyboard. These combined with the appropriate lap top enables me to sit in my chair and display on screen what I want to say. All present can read it. Works very well. While in hospital Carmen learned of  this program where text can be converted into voice. Mark downloaded the FREE version and I played with it. Since then I upgraded for $50.00 which provides for clearer voice and a definitely better program. It is quite simple, you just type your thoughts down and then make a phone call and activate the program with your PC speaker adjacent to the phone. Works great after the initial shock of the recipient. It is like telephony you talk and when finished the other chap talks and so on and so on.

With Carmen’s TLC and patience I am doing quite nicely. I feed myself through a feeder into the stomach seven 250 ml cans per day. In addition and on a regular basis, I have tea, water, chocolate milk, ice cream, juices and ice cream and puddings. Carmen has blended strawberries, rasberries and rhubard which all goes down nicely. I at times even have a sensation of taste and smell. Strange, if I burp I can smell the food and get a taste as well. Great thing is that I am now back driving and have no pain and have started some light exercises. I do have a permanent hole in my throat/chest area which enables me to breath – no swimming or it’s curtains. The specialists tell me this will give me another eight to ten years – we will see.

Now back to reality. Many of you have been wondering when I might be reactivting my Blog and I have been tossing the idea around for some time. In order to come back on stream I will no doubt be able to continue to publish items that might be of interest to you about Alder Point and area but I will be obliged to go a little further afield and discuss topics of interest about our beloved Island – Cape Breton. In keeping with this new approach, I have renamed the Blog “Cape Breton News”.

My offer still stands, if you have thoughts and suggestions of issues that you think may be of interest, scribble them down and get them off to me. In the meantime, I should again like to thank you all for your generous prayers, best wishes, emails and supportive thoughts over these past months.

    Hi George:
It’s great to have you back. That was a rough patch. But like all Cape Bretoners the response is; “bring er on by”.
Amazing what technology can do these days.
Who says we don’t have a super health system.
Looking forward to the return of your Blogs especially since your going Island wide.

    Hi George;
I was so delighted to see your e-mail today! Welcome back.
Marilyn has kept me up-to-date on your recovery; so we were able to storm God’s heavens with prayer petitions from family and friends.
George, you’ve been through a lot but you sound very up-beat. I really believe that your attitude and outlook were a big factor.
Stay well, and we will continue to keep you and Carmen in our prayers.

Glad you enjoyed it. I had a ton more material about the fishing but didnt want to make it too long. If I close my eyes I can still smell the copper paint. I loved being down at the shore in the spring sitting in the warm sun alongside someone’s fish house enjoying it. Then I would hear, “come on bye you cant be sittin there on your arse or we’ll never get anything done” and you know who that would be lol
        Take care,
        George

    George:

My father had tongue cancer over 30 years ago and it was arrested for a number of years. However, had bouts of cancer beginning at a young age of early 30’s at prostrate, tongue, then colon then lastly liver. He did not survive the liver cancer and left us at age 65. He and my mother were extremely happy and had five children. He often said to me he had faith in God and when it was his time, it is God’s will.I was very close to him and used to travel back and forth to hospitals during his many treatments. God gave him to us for a short while, but He allowed my father to see his children grow and marry.

My thoughts are with you and your family. God be with you and keep you strong. Take care of yourself. God bless you.

    Your US cousin, Sue

So great to see you back in circulation, George, you are living proof that you can’t keep a good Cape Bretoner down.
Your voice came through loud and clear in the write-up of all the events that took place – I thank you for that and admire your attitude – course it didn’t come as a surprise.
Congratulations on your recovery and we hope that you will continue to provide we expat Capers with a great link to “home” for many many years to come.
Will keep you in our prayers – seeing your name in the “Sender” column really made my day. Welcome back George.

George— just read your up- date you are doing great for what you been through, my wife Agnes always says (think positive) is the best medicine and she knows what through-3.5 years of dialisis, 2 kidney transplants and heart surgery, when she was on dialisis she wrote several poems books, 3.5 hours a day 3 days a week at the hospital and I never missed a day going with her so everyone has their up and downs in life, I always say prayer is the greatset answer and someone good to be at your side like your wife Carman,God bless you both. I had a e- mail from my cousin Donna Michel who lives in Burlington,Ont. and she was thrilled to see you back on your blog again by the way George she calls me Junior like all my aunt,s & uncles did on my mothers side, my grandmother Pearo gave me the nick- name Dewey.l.ol. Seen your bro (Deedie) last week at the mall, he looks good, he never forgot who I am see where he& his wife had the big 50 anniversary. All the best George— Dewey& family.

Hi, George: Just read your story and I’m amazed at your courage and positive attitude. My mother was Genevieve Dugas of Alder Point. She died in 1965, but told lots of stories about growing up there and all the wonderful and eccentric and some not so wonderful people. I spent summer vacations with my grandmother Theresa DuGas as a kid and grew to love Alder Point and still do. I visit as often as I can, my cousin Corinne Devoe (Walker) and my aunt Marj who was married to my late uncle Greg DuGas.

All the best with your recovery and thanks for sharing the details (not boring!) of your operation and the way you are meeting all the challenges you face. You have a wonderful family and friends.

    Take care,
    Colleen Gillis

Hi George, glad to have you back, just like all the others. I remember saying you would be back and you proved me right.
George have you thought about putting all your stories together for the Cape Breton Genealogy Society as was done with the Bras D’or Shacks stories. It would help to preserve a lot of stories.
    Welcome back.

Thanks Colin for positive comments. Yes, I have thought of putting them all together in a book format and sending them off to CBGEN for others to have a look at.
When I figure it all out I might just do that. I see you folks are having a pleasant day. We had a lot of rain past two days but sunny this morning. Take care, George

Well George . There comes a time when friends get together, as “One Big Happy Family “to send out their appreciation, of what you have done for us in the past, You h aveborught smiles to our faces , kept us up on the local news ,from our hpome towns and Informed us of our loved ones and dear friends, who have passed away . Then a sickness came upon you and you were hospitalized, you went through a lot of ttrauma (as did your Family),and became disabled . But as a fighter ,you have not become disabled enough to forget your friends , and to bring back everything you have given us in the past ,.even more now, with all of .Cape Breton Included. The term we can use is “Determination” and you give us all an example of of this term. You have proven to all of us that ,Friendship is a Godly Virtue , without friends would be a lonely life. We your friends ( I am sure I can speak for all ,who have clicked on your site and read your blog),Welcome you back into the fold ,(Literally speaking)with open arms and expect to read your stories ,obits, and just plain Cape Breton talk from all over Cape Breton .and Cape Bretoners afar.So George, My Good Friend , live one day at a time , smell the Roses ,and live life to the fullest the best way you can.
