MEAT COVE — Access to Meat Cove on the northern tip of Cape Breton is limited until further notice after heavy rains washed out bridges and the only road leading into the small fishing community.

Cathy MacIsaac director of the province’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal said the damage to the Salmon River Bridge and the Bay St. Lawrence Road was caused by heavy rain in the area.

On Sunday, five millimetres of rain was expected in certain areas, along with 20 mm in the heaviest showers.

Winds were also forecast at 20 kilometres per hour, gusting to 40.
